Can I bring a car seat without a baby on an international flight?

I am buying a new car seat for my cousin in China and do not want to check in the car seat in its original box as luggage. I was wondering if I could just carry the car seat onto the plane as a carry on item and have it left someone in the back of the plane (I am sitting in the last row) during the flight. Is this allowed to count as 1 carry on item?
I am flying on United if that changes anything.

No – you cannot bring a carseat on board as a carry-on. If it is too large to fit in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you, then it cannot be brought on board. They MAY let you check it at the gate, where it will be stowed under the plane and then be brought back up to you at the door when you land. I would call to see if that would be allowed before attempting it – I have a feeling they may not even allow that without a child traveling with you.
